News Update 26/12/10

A Chàirdean / Dear Friends

It is unbelievable that we are once again at the tail end of another year and that everyone’s lives have moved on in many different ways, some profoundly and dramatically but all, in their own way significantly. I dearly hope that 2010 has been kind to you all and if not, that the approaching year will bring exciting new potential to your lives. Sitting here in the full grip of the coldest weather I can recall on Skye, I realise that I am cutting things very finely to the bone in posting this letter of thanks and good wishes to you all but I am hopeful that it will arrive with you before the turkey has been fully digested.

This has been an amazing year in many ways and across so many different areas of activity and mine started off in very different temperatures when I visited Australia in January with the family to spend some time with my daughter, Sarah Anne, who now works as a Senior Producer with ABC in Melbourne. Our visit co-incided with the Australian Open and I was lucky enough to have been at the Rod Laver Stadium to watch Andy Murray beat Nadall in an amazing night of tennis and of course be caught on camera from the stadium by the BBC reporter covering the tournament. I then found myself broadcasting back to Britain on all sorts of networks reporting on the proceedings from Melbourne – this was all a bit novel. Unfortunately the early promise of the Australian Open was not to be repeated too often throughout the following year.

On my return I also was very fortunate to be able to do some work with BBC Radio, a medium which I really love and would enjoy becoming more regularly involved with – particularly the prospect of doing some radio specials about interesting people, initiatives and places.
I have been very deeply involved in a number of great initiatives and saw several of them successfully launched during the course of the year; in particular welcomed the development of the arts within Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, with the announcement from the newly formed Creative Scotland that we are to be the first named official host for the new Creative Futures Artists Residency Programme, a really important development for Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. I also had the pleasure of seeing the Tobar an Dualchais /Kist o Riches digitisation project go ‘live’ on the Web, giving people access to 12,000 hours of amazing Scottish sound archives from right across the country, thereby creating a resource of incredible benefit, particularly for schools, colleges and universities – and importantly for people to be able to access as this material from their own homes – it really is a cutting edge programme combining the best of modern IT with a vast resource of human knowledge and skills and is the most advanced of its type in the whole of Europe. I look forward to moving the project forward to the next stage. Of particular importance and pleasure is the announcement that Sabhal Mòr Ostaig as part of UHI will shortly be granted full University Title, something we have all worked long and hard to achieve.

On the music front I have enjoyed some amazing shows in many different places and it was a particular pleasure to return to Islay to perform after so many years and also to be a part of the Blas Festival programme for the first time. I am looking forward to the forthcoming shows in Denmark in March and I also hope to perform 2 special charity concerts here in Skye on the 18th and 19th of Feb and plans are currently being drawn up for that. All profits will go towards two named charities and we would love to see you all in Skye for a special weekend at that time just as Spring is approaching – at present I am looking at one show in Portree and one in Sleat at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig itself. Your presence at these shows would be most welcome and of course the additional benefit of knowing that it is all for charity – so watch this space for further details
As ever I am deeply indebted to all the guys in the band for their fantastic performances throughout the year and I so appreciate their willingness to work it all in to their own busy professional lives as musicians – I realise how very lucky I am to have such quality musicians to perform with and I know that they too appreciate your support and interest in the work we do together.

We are currently working on a number of possibilities for next year and I also hope to try and get into the studio to make a start on another album as soon as possible.

One of the very good features of this year has been the continuing improvement to Chris’s health and we are all so pleased to see him having come through a really tough period and to now be very much on the way to making a full recovery. We have all missed him so much and we hope that he will be able to join us for some live shows before very long.

As always I am deeply indebted to my agent, Karin Ingram of Northbeat and my Danish agent Thomas for all their hard work on my behalf, to Jacky, Catriona and Elaine and to Richard for all his great work on the Web-site. I would also thanks all the promoters and venues who have given us the opportunity throughout the year to be able to enjoy the privilege of sharing our music with you in various venues around the country and in also in Denmark. Finally, and most importantly, I would take this opportunity of thanking you all for your support throughout and I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a great New Year.

Look forward to seeing you all somewhere along the way in 2011.

Leis gach dùrachd, Moran Taing agus Nollaig Chridheil dhuibh uile
With sincerest thanks to you all and have a very Happy Christmas

Donnie

PS I now look forward to having some time to answer the questions which some of you have sent in and I will do that before the year end.
